WELCOME TO THE RODEO
Where we solve problems for small businesses and creative folks so that you can do your Best Work.
We specialize in depth marketing, sustainable systems, form-meets-function websites, and out of the box strategy consulting for solo entrepreneurs and growing small businesses who value creativity, humanity, and positive impact in their work.
What that actually means? When you work with SBR, you have a human guide to listen deeply, ask the right questions, and partner with you to uncover the next right steps for your business. We start with deep clarity and right-sizing your business, then we set up systems to support your newly-uncovered Best Work so that you can find your flow.
This is the foundational stuff that you need to be a creative business owner doing big things without burnout, and it just does not come from piecing together advice on the internet or some breakthrough formula, template, or AI bot. Sound good? Let’s wrangle your business!
“I’m reinventing the wheel every time I sit down to write an email or sign a new client. I’m exhausted!”
“My website isn’t working the way I want it to and it’s giving a BAD first impression!”
“I have no marketing plan, so I’m throwing spaghetti at the internet each week and I’m hearing crickets…”
“I have so many ideas for products and service but I’m not sure how to package them up or fit them together!”
Ready to get serious about bringing your Best Work into the world?
If you identified with two or more of the problem statements above, you’re looking for

If these snippets from the SBR Manifesto are what you need to hear right now, we are probably a great fit for working together:
-
Building a business that allows you to do your Best Work is only possible if you know how you work best. You likely need a mirror to help you see yourself clearly, which is part of why you are seeking support AND you must be committed to self-inquiry to get to your Best Work.
-
Knowing the numbers of your business will take you farther than you think. Tracking YOUR key metrics shifts your attention to the places you want to grow, and the grass is always greener where you water it. You can track both yield (quantitative data) and feel (qualitative data) and it doesn’t have to be hard!
-
Capitalism sucks, but your business doesn’t have to. Focusing on creating a positive impact in the world is good for you, your clients, and the world. Radical generosity feels good, makes the world a better place, and will also lead to more business success every time!
-
Or even one-size-fits-most. Templates, formulas, courses, and Youtube University can only get you so far without an actual human guiding you to implement strategies in a way that works for your business and your brain. One-to-many teaching can be a good accessible starting place, but it should always allow for nuance and eventually you will grow to the point that you need personalized support.
-
Sounds basic, but isn’t. We very often get wrapped up in thinking about a list of solutions or how we will implement a solution without stopping to examine if we are solving the right problem in business. You almost always need a mirror to back you up to making sure your current idea is solving the right problem.
-
You can move pretty quick if you never check a map, but you will likely end up somewhere other than where you actually wanted to go and backtracking will take you extra time in the long run! Slowing down to make sure you have the right map and check that you are following that map will take more time up front (and sometimes feels like moving backwards!) but over time you will reap rewards.
-
I am a firm believer that you can do anything you set your mind to (though it might take longer and more work than you really want). BUT! You cannot do everything. Almost every small business owner I know is doing too much already. Doing your Best Work means saying “not right now” to things you REALLY WANT TO DO. It’s a painful but crucial part of the process.
-
This is a marketing axiom that also applies broadly to small business as a whole. Confused people don’t buy things. And, when you are confused about your own business, you will avoid doing important work and stick to the parts of business that feel clear. Naming confusion and diving in until things are crystal clear is integral to wrangling your work.
-
You have a unique perspective that is informed by your experience, your creativity, your human design/astrology, and every person you have ever known. Even if someone else is already doing/saying/teaching/offering the thing you want to create, they aren’t doing it like you! When you get clarity on what your Best Work looks like and start aligning what you are doing with what you want to be doing while sharing from your voice, magic happens!!
-
When there is a place for everything and everything is in its place in your business, you can work your systems and let your nervous system relax. If you have 2,347 ideas, tasks, and follow-ups living in your brain at any given time, it’s no wonder you can’t find any work/life balance or step into the ever-elusive ~flow state~! Every person needs different systems to support their Best Work, and when you get them dialed in, it feels like you can breathe again. Which is ACTUAL self care.
-
Or, eat the frog. Do the thing that feels hardest to make mental space, collapse timelines, and take leaps. See also: you use twice as much energy avoiding something as doing it; the work that feels hard has the most to teach you about yourself; and finding the magic in the mundane is how we make life whimsical and fun.
-
Our little human brains looooove to make things into false dichotomies. It makes us feel safe. And it’s wildly unhelpful to creative business owners! Running a small business means existing in the liminal spaces, leaning into the uncategorized, and looking at everything with a creative lens. If you think there are only two choices in front of you, think again!
Cool, cool, cool but what even is this “Best Work”?
Your Best Work is what you can do when your soul-level desires and natural gifts are aligned with your business model, offers, and community AND supported by the right architecture under the hood.
It’s the end result of intentionally designing your business, rather than throwing spaghetti, chasing someone else’s dream, or burning yourself out by working the wrong ways (been there 🙋🏻♀️, don’t recommend).
Here’s a handy little graphic showing all the elements that we need to have clarity, alignment, strategies, and support around in order to bring forth our Best Work:
You probably know what it feels like to reflect on something and say “that wasn’t my best work” … but it’s a little bit harder to identify why it wasn’t and how to get there.
That’s where Small Business Rodeo comes in! We wade through the muddy arena with small business owners to help them wrangle their work and find their flow so that their own unique Best Work can emerge. It’s a bit different for everyone, and (frustrating, I know)…
you’ll know it when you feel it 🤠
Maybe you’ve had glimmers of your own Best Work?
Maybe you ran a workshop or had a client session or ended a workday or wrote an article and reflected: “I wish work could always feel like this” … then immediately categorized that thought as an impossibility.
Maybe deep down, you know what needs to change but it’s too scary to take the leap.
Maybe you are getting really close but there’s one big problem standing in your way (that task or project you’ve been dreading for months, perhaps).
If any of these feel like you, let’s chat about it! Whether or not you’re ready to work with SBR I would love to hear all about your business and where you are stuck, spinning, or juggling.
Any of these common Small Business problems keeping you up at night?
Website isn’t working for you and you’re embarrassed to share it
Hired an assistant but it only made more work for you because nothing was clear enough for them to truly help
To-Do list is all in your head or scattered on post-it notes
Marketing plan is panic-posting last minute stories on Instagram
Graveyard of half-finished online biz courses and worksheets collecting dust in your files
Onboarding a new client is so chaotic that you don’t even want any new clients (but you need them)
Need to make more money so you can hire help, but need to hire help to make more money
Working nights and weekends and never feeling caught up
Someone asks you what you do at a party and you freeze like a deer in headlights trying to come up with a description that feels right
Made a new offer, heard crickets
Gotta stop emailing the list only when something is launching but the writer’s block is so real
Spent 87 hours today searching for that one google doc you made with the REALLY GOOD notes and … never found it.
Small business problem solver, at your service
Unlike your friends who really don’t get what you do all day, your partner who desperately wants to make it through one dinner without talking about email newsletters, or your Mom who just needs to know how much you pay yourself …
I can’t wait to hear allllll about your business.
The short bio: Heather is a problem-solver, strategist and small business guide with experience founding, managing, and consulting in a cross-section of micro and small business sectors spanning online to IRL and service-based to product-based. Her varied business experience and knack for finding root problems combine with her creativity and passion for supporting woman-led independent small businesses to help creative folks wrangle their work and find their flow at SBR. Heather believes we can all build thriving businesses that are both meaningful and manageable while having some fun along the way.
The good stuff: I am fascinated by the intersection of intuition and data in business planning. You’ll often find me asking both intuition-driven questions like “which option feels more right in your gut?” and data-driven questions like “how does the conversion rate compare for those two options?” in order to get to the bottom of the next right move for my clients. My consulting specialty is mixing together classic business strategy, modern tools, and lots of questions to look at things differently for each client.
I view my clients as whole people with full lives and unique needs. We do flexible frameworks with room for dreaming, data, and dynamic change ‘round these parts and I am decidedly not a fan of any business program that touts a one-size-fits-all formula. I believe that everyone’s Best Work looks different, which means different rhythms, structures, and systems to support it—for me, designing those is the fun part!
